Thrombocytopenia is a condition in which platelet count decreases to less than 1,50,000/µL of blood and occurs generally due to decrease in  platelet production or increased destruction of the platelets. Thrombocytopenia is reported in many clinical conditions such as - various infections, malignancy, liver disease, autoimmune disorders, disseminated intravascular coagulation, pregnancy, menstruation,  medications, and coagulation disorders.

Pre analytical errors like errors during blood collection, storage condition, volume of blood taken or use of EDTA vial can induce thrombocytopenia even in a normal patient.

This newsletter deals with the pre analytical errors that lead to pseudo thrombocytopenia and corrective actions to be taken in such cases.
